You can change cash and traveler's checks in major currencies ($, €, ¥, £) at banks and moneychangers in Mataram and in the tourist centers at Senggigi, Gilis and Kuta. The best rates are usually in Senggigi. Personal checks are almost never accepted. The rate of traveler's checks will be less than bank notes. On the local banks the rate is slightly lower than moneychangers. The rates in Lombok also 10% to 15% lower than in Bali but with no commissions.
Make sure to count your money in front of the moneychanger's reception before you leave moneychangers to prevent miss understanding.
Many sellers do not have small change, if you plan on making small purchases be sure to carry small denominations. Useful also for taxi drivers, cause often they have none.
In remotes area it is difficult to get change, make sure you will carry a lot of small notes and loose change.
The rate posted on the door usually is for amounts in notes of US $100. Lesser-denominated notes (i.e. $50) will be given a less favorable rate
Be prepared; if you are cashing travelers checks, you will need to present your passport for identification and many moneychangers do not accept cash notes that have been defaced.
Most larger hotels and some restaurants in Lombok accept credit cards, however smaller hotels and cottages, particularly on the islands will accept cash only.
